COVID-19 vaccination is not a cure-all or a complete substitute for safe behaviour. It should supplement other public health rules and guidelines.  

After you are vaccinated, COVID-safe measures remain in place. These include:

  • testing
  • contact tracing 
  • quarantine 
  • isolation .

“A modest percentage of people who are fully vaccinated will still get Covid-19 if they are exposed to the virus that causes it,” Dr. Walensky said in the email. Still, most vaccinated people with a breakthrough infection are likely to have mild symptoms.11 Aug 2021

To continue to protect others, you still need to:
understand how to isolate if you need to.

In July a fully vaccinated nurse at a COVID ward at Westmead Hospital in Western Sydney tested positive for COVID-19. As well as receiving both doses of a COVID vaccine – it is not clear which one – she had been wearing full PPE.
 
Later in the week, a similar story emerged in Queensland where a woman employed at Brisbane Airport returned a positive result for the virus – again after receiving two doses of a COVID vaccine.
 
Such reports are only likely to become more frequent as the vaccination rate accelerates across the country.
 
The picture abroad, where more people have had their full vaccine dosage, is a clear bellwether. The London-based Financial Timesreported that around 17% of recent infections caused by the Delta strain in the United Kingdom are among those who have been fully vaccinated (defined as more than 14 days after the final vaccine dose).

The Significance of Choice

 I spent many years in the RAAF and discipline was a part of life.  We only had limited freedom on base and appreciated our freedoms and the choices we had off base.  Even when I was an Investigator with Immigration we dealt with a unsavoury element of human traffickers and crawled in tight spacer both on boats and on land.  Due to this we had a need for Hep injections, but this a individuals choice even though work paid for them.  The same went with Influenza and pneumococcal injections.
