The CoVid-19 Shell game

Respiratory diseases include causes of death such as pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lower respiratory diseases (including emphysema and chronic bronchitis). Deaths due to COVID-19 are not included in this category. COVID-19 deaths are captured using WHO issued emergency codes U07.1 and U07.2 and are not currently grouped with any other diseases, though they are included in the total number of deaths and are presented in the data downloads.

  • There were 6,257 deaths from respiratory diseases between January and June 2021.
  • This is comparable to both the 2015-19 average of 6,177 deaths, and the 6,139 deaths at the same point in 2020.
  • During June 2021 there were 1,193 deaths due to respiratory diseases, which is 197 (19.8%) more than in June 2020, and comparable to the baseline average of 1,249.

Influenza and pneumonia are acute respiratory diseases often grouped together when compiling leading causes of death. They are two distinct diseases: influenza is a viral infection, while pneumonia can be caused by a virus, bacteria or fungi. Influenza is a common cause of pneumonia.

Influenza and pneumonia (J09-J18) are a subset of respiratory diseases (J00-J99).

  • There were 959 deaths due to influenza and pneumonia recorded between January and June 2021. All deaths in this category were due to pneumonia.
  • This is 310 deaths (24.4%) lower than the 2015-19 average, and 252 deaths (20.8%) lower than at the same point in 2020.

Influenza

  • There has not been a death certified due to influenza in the first six months of 2021. The last death certified as being due to influenza occurred in July 2020. This in itself gives way to the theory a number of cases and deaths currently attributed to CoVid-19 are from other diseases and being claimed as comorbidity and stats are considered as C0Vid-19 related.

Pneumonia

  • The number of deaths due to pneumonia has been largely below average since late April 2020.
  • Between January and June 2021, deaths due to pneumonia were 194 (16.8%) below the 2015-19 average and 210 deaths (18.0%) below the same point in 2020.
  • During June 2021 there were 192 deaths due to pneumonia, which comparable to the 188 deaths in June 2020 but remains 21.6% below the baseline average.

Chronic lower respiratory diseases

Chronic lower respiratory diseases include chronic bronchitis, emphysema, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD). Chronic lower respiratory diseases (J40-J47) are a sub-group of respiratory diseases (J00-J99).

  • There were 3,473 deaths from chronic lower respiratory diseases between January and June 2021.
  • This is comparable to the 2015-19 average of 3,393, and 117 deaths (3.5%) higher than at the same point in 2020.
  • During June 2021 there were 633 deaths from chronic lower respiratory conditions, which is 15.1% higher than in June 2020, but remains 4.8% below the baseline average of 665 deaths.

And yet COVID-19 which is a respiratory infection caused by a new coronavirus has been hijacking statistics of other diseases or conditions, especially deaths in those over 60 year olds

On 11 March 2020 the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 to be a pandemic. Information relating to COVID-19 mortality for both 2020 and 2021 is also published in the Provisional Mortality Statistics publication.

For the 898 people who died from COVID-19 in 2020:

  • COVID-19 was the 38th leading cause of death.
  • Their median age at death was 86 years.
  • Just over half were female (460 female deaths, 438 male deaths).
  • People who died from the virus under the age of 70 were more likely to be male.
  • Dementia was the most common pre-existing condition (275 deaths).
  • Chronic cardiac conditions, hypertension and diabetes were also commonly reported comorbidities.
The majority of deaths occurred in people with a usual residence of Victoria (800 deaths).
